Research Products

Crop researchers face increasing pressure to move genetics, products, and management practices through the selection process. Drone data is a solution to the labour and time constraints that limit the number of data points that can be collected in a single season. Using the rapid and simultaneous collection of plot observations by drones, researchers can improve the power of studies by redeploying resources to conducting trials in more environments and with greater depth.

Aerial imagery can deliver quantifiable data for agricultural scientists while reducing the labour requirements for field observations. We deliver plot-level data in a format that can be immediately used in statistical analyses.

Available Products

1. Basic NDVI/NDRE

Our introductory package extracts average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and  Normalized Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE) for each plot. These two tools for estimating the leafiness and greenness of crop canopies, and for these reasons are often referred to as ‘Plant Health’ indices. The NDVI is suited to vegetative growth stages while the red edge index generally performs better in the reproductive growth stages and has stronger correlations to chlorophyll content.

2. Vegetative Fraction

The vegetative fraction analysis estimates canopy cover as a percentage of the total plot area by isolating green pixels from high resolution images. The vegetative fraction can be used as a snapshot or analyzed in a series for rate of canopy closure.

3. Canola Flowering Estimator

A yellowness index generated from UAV imagery is an effective tool for estimating the progression of canola flowering. We can estimate the extent and intensity of yellowness by isolating flowers in the imagery.
